KDP Select: what it pays, what you give up.
KDP Select puts your ebook in Kindle+, Amazon's reading subscription, and pays you for pages read. The price is 90 days of exclusivity for the ebook. Here is how the money works, from KDP's own help pages, and an estimator for your month using the rate in your KDP report.
Estimated month
Enter pages read and the per-page rate from your KDP report.
KDP says the rate changes every month, so a real month's payment will differ from any estimate made with another month's rate.
How KDP Select works
- A free 90-day program. KDP's help pages describe it as a free 90-day program for Kindle eBooks and audiobooks. Enrollment renews automatically unless you turn automatic renewal off.
- Exclusivity for the ebook. Your Kindle eBook must be exclusive to the Kindle Store for the enrollment period. KDP says you can continue to distribute print, video or other formats of the title elsewhere.
- Kindle+. Enrolled books are automatically included in Kindle+, which KDP describes as a subscription where customers can enjoy unlimited reading and listening of enrolled books for a monthly fee. Some KDP pages still call it Kindle Unlimited (KU).
- Promotions. Kindle Countdown Deals (a limited-time discount on Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk) and Free Book Promotions (free for up to five days), for Kindle eBooks only.
How page reads are paid
- Reading is measured in Kindle Edition Normalized Pages (KENP).
- KDP says you are paid the first time a subscriber reads or listens to a given page of your book.
- Each month KDP announces the size of the KDP Select Global Fund. Your earnings are your share of total pages read or listened to by subscribers.
- That works out to a per-page rate that changes every month, so the estimator above asks for the rate from your own report.
KDP reports that total KDP Select author earnings for September 2026 were $69.3 million, across all enrolled authors. That is the program's total, not what any one book earns.
What you give up
The cost of KDP Select is the ebook's other stores. For 90 days at a time, KDP requires the Kindle eBook to be exclusive to the Kindle Store, so it cannot be on sale in Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play or any other ebook store during the term. Leaving takes planning: KDP says you have three days from the start of an enrollment period to cancel, and that once a book leaves, royalties on sales in Brazil, Japan, India and Mexico go back to 35%.
Is it worth it for a business book?
For a business author, the book usually earns more through clients, talks and fees than through any single format, so the question is reach. If the readers you want are already on Kindle, Select costs little. If you want the ebook in every store, or available to bookstores and libraries through other distributors, stay out. Either way, print and audio are unaffected.
For the bigger picture, royalties explained covers every format, and the book value calculator adds the rest of what a book can bring.

Common questions
What is KDP Select?
KDP's help pages describe it as a free 90-day program for Kindle eBooks and audiobooks. Enrolled books are included in Kindle+, the reading subscription, and earn a share of the monthly KDP Select Global Fund based on pages read. In return the Kindle eBook must be exclusive to the Kindle Store for the enrollment period.
How much does KDP Select pay per page?
It changes every month. KDP says you earn a share of the KDP Select Global Fund based on your share of total pages read or listened to by subscribers, that the fund size is announced monthly, and that the KENP rate changes every month. Your KDP report shows the rate for each month; enter it in the estimator above.
Is Kindle+ the same as Kindle Unlimited?
KDP's help pages now call the subscription Kindle+, and some of them still refer to Kindle Unlimited (KU) when describing the same page-read earnings. Either way, enrolled books earn from the same KDP Select Global Fund.
Can I sell my paperback elsewhere if my ebook is in KDP Select?
Yes. The exclusivity applies to the Kindle eBook. KDP's help pages say you can continue to distribute print and other formats of your title elsewhere.
How do I leave KDP Select?
Turn off automatic renewal and the enrollment ends with the current 90-day term. KDP says you have three days from the start of an enrollment period to cancel it; after that, contact KDP. When it ends, KDP says royalties on sales in Brazil, Japan, India and Mexico go back to 35%.
